Staying on Schedule in the New Year

A New Year provides a new opportunity for staying on schedule. Beach after a storm by Karl Robb 2022The New Year is rapidly approaching. View this coming date as an opportunity for a fresh start - a year of growth, rejuvenation, and joy!The process of getting organized is one that I personally find challenging, even as I near the age of 60 with 40 of those years living with Parkinson’s disease! The suggestions offered for this piece are more wishes and hopes that some of you will achieve a reliable yearly calendar. My paper calendar is always playing catch-up with my electronic calendar. There is something antiquated in me that refuses to give it up. I think that I just need that tactile feel of pen to paper to bank the date as a pending and upcoming reality. I do wish that I were better at keeping my date book consistent, accurate, and neat.

With AI as all the rage, I asked Copilot for some ideas, and I thought it gave some very sound suggestions. Here it is for you to consider:

10 Tips for Keeping a Good Calendar for the New Year

Stay Organized and Stay OnTrack All Year Long

As a new year begins, maintaining an effective calendar can help you stay organized, manage your time efficiently, and achieve your goals. Whether you prefer digital tools or a traditional paper planner, these tips will set you up for success in keeping your calendar up to date and useful throughout the year.

1. Choose the Right Calendar System

Start by selecting a calendar system that fits your lifestyle and preferences. Digital calendars like Google Calendar and Outlook offer easy access and sharing, while paper planners give a tactile experience and can be customized. Pick a tool you’ll actually use every day.

2. Set Aside Time for Planning

Dedicate a specific time each week to review and update your calendar. This habit helps avoid last-minute surprises and ensures you’re prepared for upcoming events and deadlines.

3. Color Code Your Entries

Use color coding to visually separate different types of events—work, personal, family, health, and so on. Color coding makes it easier to see what’s coming up at a glance.

4. Add All Important Dates Early

At the start of the year, input all known events such as holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, and recurring meetings. This way, you won’t forget these important dates as the year progresses.

5. Set Reminders for Events

Take advantage of reminder features in digital calendars or use sticky notes in paper planners. Setting reminders ahead of time for meetings, deadlines, and special occasions ensures nothing gets missed.

6. Break Down Large Projects

For big tasks or projects, schedule milestones and deadlines in your calendar. Breaking down work into manageable steps helps you stay on track and reduces stress.

7. Leave Buffer Time Between Events

Don’t schedule events back-to-back. Build in buffer time for travel, preparation, or unexpected delays. This keeps your day running smoothly and reduces the risk of overcommitting.

8. Review and Adjust Regularly

Life changes, and so should your calendar. Regularly review your schedule and make adjustments as needed, removing completed tasks and rescheduling postponed activities.

9. Sync Calendars Across Devices

If you use digital tools, sync your calendar across all devices—phone, computer, tablet—so you always have access to your schedule wherever you are.

10. Make Time for Yourself

Don’t forget to schedule downtime, self-care, and personal activities. A well-balanced calendar supports both productivity and personal well-being throughout the year.
